Safety Glass Test Developments

An ISO Standard is needed--and is being developed by TC 160--to determine safetyrelated performance of glass-based glazng panels for impact events representative of accidental human body contact. Development of performance-based safety glazing standards are reviewed, with a number of examples and a chronology to support application of the performance concept to essential requirements for safety glazing. The purpose of this work is to analyze development of the shot-bag pendulum approach and examine the premise that the shot-bag method is an appropriate basis for evaluating technical equivalence of other test designs and their performance criteria. Content is intended to: (1) review national consensus standards for tests related to safety glazing, (2) describe the intellectual and literature linkages of the shot-bag test to human impact simulation, and (3) define basic criteria for technical equivalence among impact tests.
