US/Egypt Workshop on Sustainable Coastal Development through Aquaculture and211 Fisheries

This report describes a National Science Foundation sponsored workshop held in211u001eAlexandria, Egypt on Sustainable Coastal Development through Aquaculture and 211u001eFisheries from 18 to 21 April, 1999. The U.S. participants represented a range of 211u001eacademic, government, and private-sector organizations. The workshop focused on 211u001ethree topics, mariculture, fisheries, and environmental sensing. Overviews of 211u001eeach of the topics and historic and current studies are included in the form of 211u001epresentation summaries. Problem areas and research directions are also covered. 211u001eRountable discussions were held to identify and prioritize topics that emerge as 211u001epotential collaborative opportunities between the U.S. and Egyptian participants. 211u001eSix priorities were identified that related to aquaculture: (1) commercial scale 211u001emarine hatcheries, (2) formulation and production of marine fish diets in Egypt, 211u001e(3) disease prevention and treatment, (4) extension services, (5) recirculation 211u001etechnology to produce and raise larvae for marine fish, and (6) offshore fish 211u001efarms west of Alexandria.
