National Legal Assistance and Elder Rights Project: Final Progress Report

Training is particularly critical in the field of elderlaw. The virtual explosion211u001eof legislation and litigation in this area over the past decade has made it 211u001eextraordinarily difficult for advocates to keep current on issues in public 211u001eentitlements, protective services, nursing home law and low income housing. Given 211u001ethe decreased funding for Legal Services Programs and the Ombudsman Programs 211u001eunder the Older Americans Act, along with the major continued growth of the aging 211u001epopulation, free training in substantive law, advocacy skills and training skills 211u001eis an invaluable and necessary service to aid in filling this important gap. The 211u001eNational Legal Assistance Support Project proposes to continue to provide 211u001etraining, with an emphasis on statewide coalitions that link legal services with 211u001eaging and other community services. Every state must develop the capacity to 211u001eprovide ongoing training in substantive elder law and advocacy skills. To achieve 211u001ethis goal, the state elderlaw specialists must be trained to be trainers for 211u001ediverse audiences.
