Networked Computing for the 21st Century; Supplement to the President's FY 1999211 Budget: Computing, Information, and Communications

Federally-funded R&D in these technologies is coordinated within the Computing,211u001eInformation, and Communications (CIC) R&D programs, which are successors to the 211u001eHigh Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) Program. Over the past two 211u001eyears, these programs have redefined themselves and are in the process of 211u001ereorganizing their coordinated activities into five Program Component Areas 211u001e(PCAs): HECC (High End Computing and Computation); LSN (Large Scale Networking, 211u001eincluding the Next Generation Internet Initiative); HCS (High Confidence 211u001eSystems); HuCS (Human Centered Systems); ETHR (Education, Training, and Human 211u001eResources); plus the Federal Information Services and Applications Council 211u001e(FISAC). This document describes the HECC and LSN FY 1998 anticipated 211u001eaccomplishments and FY 1999 plans in substantial detail I. It also includes 211u001edescriptions of some representative HCS, HuCS, and ETHER activities and plans, 211u001eprimarily focusing on work by organizations that have been in the CIC programs.
