Transportation Engineering Education and Outreach Program Designed for the211 Collegiate Level

The past decade has seen revolutionary changes in the face of transportation in211u001ethe United States. With the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems 211u001e(ITS) and the monumental leaps made in technology applications in all aspects of 211u001elife, the transportation profession is faced with a new dilemma. In short, the 211u001ecurrent and future success of the transportation infrastructure and its diverse 211u001earray of components depend on developing a larger cadre of transportation 211u001eprofessionals capable of designing, planning, managing, operating, and 211u001emaintaining it. Furthermore, overall awareness of transportation by the general 211u001epublic is necessary to ensure political, community, and financial support of 211u001efuture transportation projects. The next generation of transportation 211u001eprofessionals will come from current and future groups of undergraduate, graduate 211u001estudents, and vocational and technical school students. Thus it is critical that 211u001euniversities take a proactive role in educating and preparing future 211u001etransportation professionals to work effectively and efficiently in the 21st 211u001ecentury.
