Verification of Radar Vehicle Detection Equipment

The South Dakota Department of Transportation performs traffic counts at 52211u001epermanent sites throughout the state. Currently, inductive loops imbedded in the 211u001epavement are being used to perform these counts. The problem is that the loops 211u001eare prone to being destroyed when maintenance is performed on the roadways. 211u001eTherefore, it was decided that other options for the traffic counting needed to 211u001ebe explored. A non-intrusive system was chosen to be tested for traffic counting. 211u001eThe Remote Traffic Microwave Sensor (RTMS) manufactured by Electronic Integrated 211u001eSystems Inc. (EIS) was selected because it is placed above the roadway and 211u001ebecause of its performance in similar applications. The RTMS was tested for its 211u001eability to accurately count traffic, and it was compared to the inductive loops 211u001efor its cost effectiveness.
