Results of the 1998-1999 Field Evaluation of Pavement Marking Materials Appliedon Alaska Test Decks

This report summarizes the results of data collected as part of the 1998-1999field evaluation of pavemnet marking materials. The purpose of testing the various marking materials is to improve the cost-effectiveness of providing traffic markings. There is a movement in Alaska to use only pavement marking materials that have a relatively longer life span. Paints (both water borne and solvent borne) have shown to have a short duration of usefulness. The harsh climatic conditions, studded tires, sanding and snowplowing all contribute to the rapid wearing of the traffic markings. The goal is to find an economical traffic marking material that can withstand this amount of wearing. The type of testing performed under this project will provide information that will be used to evaluate the acceptability of materials and to compare the performance of similar materials.
