A conference 'Improving Emergency Medical Services for Children Through Outcomes Research': An Interdisciplinary Approach was the final product of a contract between Emergency Medical Services for Children Program of MCHB and the Ambulatory Pediatric Association to assess and develop strategies to overcome barriers to doing research in pediatric emergency medicine. The conference was planned by a multi-disciplinary group of pediatric emergency medicine and health service researches along with members of several federal agencies and programs. Its specific purposes were to review existing outcome measures, their strengths and weaknesses and their applicability to pediatric emergency medicine, identification of areas where new measures are needed, promotion of dialogue between health services researchers, representatives of federal agencies, and pediatric emergency medicine investigators, and fostering a new generation of pediatric emergency medicine researchers with improved understanding of health services research methodology.
