The author provides a new analysis of student achievement scores for states on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, NAEP. Only in mathematics (grades 4 and 8) and reading (grade 4 only) are state trend data currently available, although new state data in science and mathematics are scheduled to be released later in 2001. Barton has analyzed state NAEP data to identify state trends in performance of students in the top and bottom quartiles of performance, as well as changes in the student achievement gap between whites and minority (black and Hispanic) and top and bottom quartiles.
