Understanding the Nexus: Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse Among the Arrestee Population in Albuquerque

This study examined violence between intimate partners within an arrestee population in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The study employed logistic regression to identify social indicators that may increase the likelihood of a respondent being a perpetrator of intimate partner violence. The focus of the study was to determine the difference between arrestees who have battered an intimate partner and those who did not, and what role drug and or alcohol use may have played in the level of abuse. Results from various models showed drug or alcohol use prior to the most recent incident of domestic violence and a history of violence in the family of orientation were statistically significant in predicting severe intimate partner abuse. Additionally, this study revealed a high rate of violent interaction between abuser and abused.
