Cultural Landscape Report for John Muir National Historic Site. Volume 1: Site History Existing Conditions, and Analysis.

A Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) serves the National Park Service (NPS) in both documenting the history and significance of cultural landscapes and providing guidance for both day-to-day and long- term management and interpretation. To this end, this CLR for the John Muir National Historic Site (NHS) consists of a narration of landscape history, an inventory and analysis of existing conditions and landscape significance, and treatment recommendations and actions consistent with the Secretary of Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The park's 'General Management Plan/Environmental Assessment (GMP/EA),' updated in 1991, sets forth the basic management philosophy for the landscape. The report calls for the integration of the newly acquired lands into the operations of the site and expansion of the park's visitor and protection use programs to include emphasis on the cultural and natural aspects of the added lands. Based on the recommendations made in the GMP/EA and from a treatment workshop held in July 2003, the CLR will document the history and significance of the John Muir landscape and prescribe short- and long- term landscape management and protection strategies.
