摘要

Regular physical activity that is performed on most days of the week has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of developing or dying from some of the leading causes of illness and death in the United States. A Surgeon General's report on exercise concluded that moderate exercise can reduce the risk for heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, and hypertension (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1996). This Statistical Brief presents data from the Household Component of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS-HC) concerning exercise among the adult, age 18 and older, noninstitutionalized (community) population. Estimates are for calendar year 2002. Emphasis is placed on the relationships between exercise and age, race/ethnicity, sex, income, education level, and health insurance status. Only differences that are statistically significant at the 0.05 level are discussed in the text.
