Global almond and walnut trade is forecast to continue expanding at a rate of more than 10 percent annually, while hazelnuts are advancing at only a moderate rate. Whereas past years growth for almonds and walnuts was driven by mature markets, recent growth has been driven by emerging markets. In contrast, there has been little additional hazelnut demand from emerging markets. As a result, hazelnut production continues to outstrip consumption, at times pushing inventory levels to half of world consumption.
