This brief begins by comparing public high school graduates in terms of their average credits earned in core science coursework (biology, chemistry, and physics) and their average scores on the NAEP 12th-grade science assessment. Core science coursework-rather than total science coursework-is examined, because The Nation's Report Card: Science 2005 focused on core science course taking for 12th-graders (National Assessment of Educational Progress 2006). The brief then examines in a cross tabular format the relationship between NAEP composite science scores and core science credits earned, for concentrators in the 13 occupational program areas and for non-concentrators.
