An invariant relationship has been found in human Ss between conditioned heart rate response magnitude and a wide range of shock US durations.n Under the assumption that cardiac disturbance is an index of fear, this fact is related to N. S. Miller’s statement of a drive-reduction view, “…other things equal, a signal followed by a brief noxious stimulus should acquire the capacity to elicit stronger fear than one followed by a prolonged noxious stimulus.” It is concluded that this statement is either incorrect or not testable under the conditions provided.
