GENERALIZATION TO VARYING TONE FREQUENCIES AS A FUNCTION OF INTENSITY OF UNCONDITIONED STIMULUS

The experiment here reported is concerned with a twofold problem: (1) whether a conditioned depression in heart-rate generalizes to tones other than that used as the original con­ditioned stimulus, and (2) whether the amount of such generalization is related to the intensity of shock used as the unconditioned stimulus. The cardiac response was conditioned in two groups of 20 human subjects each, using a 1920 c.p.s. tone as the conditioned stimulus, and either a “high shock”(28 volts a.c.) or “low shock”(20 volts a.c.) as the unconditioned stim­ulus.
