Deflections and Stresses of a Hemispherically-Based Projectile Acted on by Band-Pressure Alone

A method, based on thin-shell theory, for calculating the radial deflections, surface stresses, and interior volume of a hemisphericallybased shell acted on by band-pressure alone has been applied to Shell HE, 75mm, T50E2. In order to avoid complexities, the exact shape of this vessel has not been used, but two idealizations - one consisting of a hemispherical shell attached to a cylindrical shell, the other of a hemispherical shell attached to a composite cylindrical shell, consisting of two sections of different thickness - have been employed. The dimen¬sions of these idealizations approximate, as closely as possible, those of Shell HE, 75mm, T50E2. Subject to the limitations of the particular thin-shell theory used in this report, Consideration of the deflections of the two idealizations provides a reasonable approximation for the max¬imum deflection of this projectile.
