Kinetic rate data for the linear surface gasification (pyrolysis) of ammonium nitrate is used in conjunction with the Eyring grain-burning theory to calculate the detonation reaction time for ammonium nitrate. A new grain-burning mechanism is presented which results in a reaction time for detonating ammonium nitrate that is consistent with the one calculated by means of the nozzle and curved-front diameter theories. The implications of the new model with respect to low-velocity detonations in mixtures of granular explosives is deiscussed.
