Ultrasonic waves are widely utilized to detect hidden flaws and determine the microstructure of materials. To measure grain sizes in metals, for instance, ultrasonic attenuation is: determined at various ultrasonic frequencies. However, the method presently used for this: purpose is very time consuming.nA novel technique for obtaining the ultrasonic attenuation/frequency relationship in a single operation is suggested and investigated. This new method employs ultrasonic pulses which contain energy over a wide band of frequencies, and uses a spectrum analyzer to detect the frequency dependence of ultrasonic attenuation.
