The Epidemiology of Respiratory Disease in a Total Natural Community and Evaluation of Immunizing Agents

The systematic surveillance is continuing in the total natural community of Tecumseh, Michigan. A panel of individuals is being followed for the occurrence of respiratory infections. Two peaks in incidence of illness were observed during the period. One occurred in September 1966 and was associated with isolation of a number of rhinovirus strains. The second took place in February 1967 and was accompanied by repeated isolations of respiratory syncytial virus and of other myxoviruses and rhinoviruses. Parainfluenzavirus types 1 and 3 were isolated throughout the study and the isolation rates increased markedly during November 1966. However, no increase in disease incidence was noted at this time and the illnesses which did occur appeared to be relatively mild. Specimens for virus isolation are also being collected from all admissions for acute respiratory disease at the only hospital in Tecumseh. (Author)
