摘要

The access device consists of medical grade silastic tubing having numerous sidewall perforations in the intraabdominal section. Dacron felt was bonded to the silastic in 2 places, immediately extraperitoneally and immediately subcutaneously with a subcutaneous tunnel of at least 3 inches separating the two dacron felt cuffs. Tissue grows into these cuffs, thus preventing sliding at the skin exit site and hopefully also preventing bacterial invasion of the sinus tract. Although tissue ingrowth was studied histologically in only a few instances over a maximum period of 7 months so far, tissue ingrowth appeared good and viable. Cultures were obtained from the peritoneal cavity in 11 animals at monthly intervals and in only 2 instances staphylococcus epidermidis (coagulase negative) was grown. This was considered a contaminant in both cases. Tissue ingrowth, long term tissue reaction to the implanted dacron felt and the effectiveness of the implanted dacron felt in preventing infection of the peritoneal cavity need to be studied over a longer period of time, however, before final conclusions can be drawn.
