Preparation of Antigens and Antisera for Influenza Virus Types

During this period all processing final packaging of all lyophilized antiserum pools and frozen and lyophilized agent pools was completed with the exception of the lyophilized A/Equine-1/Prague/56 and A2/Taiwan/1/64 agent pools. All testing of final ampouled reagents was completed satisfactorily with the exception of the lyophilized A/Equine-1/Prague/56 and A2/Taiwan/1/64 agent pools. Egg serum neutralization identity tests of these two lots are in progress along with egg infectivity titrations of the A/Equine-1/Prague/56 agent pool. Calendar and accelerated stability tests were run on all five influenza viruses lyophilized in the same manner as the reagents to be supplied. These tests demonstrated that the lyophilized viruses are much more stable than the fluid viruses and retained two - three logs of infectivity after storage at 37 C for 60 - 95 days. Statistical analysis of an accelerated storage test by extrapolation of viral degradation indicates that the lyophilized viruses are stable indefinitely at or below room temperature. (Author)
