摘要

The interaction of blood and blood components with polymer surfaces has been studied using a variety of physico-chemical techniques. Infrared internal reflection spectroscopy studies have shown that plasma proteins rapidly adsorb onto a variety of neutral, hydrophobic polymers to form compact monolayers which adhere strongly to the polymer surface. When the protein adsorption experiments were conducted under flow conditions rather than under static conditions some differences in adsorption behavior were noted. Data on phospholipid adsorption have been obtained. The interaction of platelets with polymer surfaces has been studied using both an open-cell (static, air interface) device and a closed-cell (flow, no air interface) device. Data obtained using these devices indicate that when the polymer film is in contact with a blood/air interface, a layer of denatured protein is deposited on the surface of the polymer. There is an increase in platelet adsorption with increasing surface free energy of the polymer, which is in turn related to surface thrombogenicity.
