Strength and Rigidity of Bolted Beam to Column Connections

The report describes an experimental investigation into the structural behaviour of a particular type of bolted connection. This consists of a steel plate profile welded to the end of the beam and bolted with 'High Strength Friction Grip' bolts to the column flange. In all, 13 assemblies were tested and attention was paid to the strength of the connection, its rotational capacity and its ability to develop a plastic hinge, with all elements forming the joint reaching plasticity simultaneously. After a brief introduction the report deals in order with the design calculations for the test assemblies, conditions of loading and method of instrumentation. This is followed by a brief description of each individual test with partiuclar reference to its mode of failure. Graphs of load/deflection are shown, also photographs of the deformed connections and a brief discussion of future work is given. Finally, general conclusions are drawn which, it is suggested, could influence the economy of the design of beam to column connections. (Author)
