Headway Sensing for Automatically Controlled and Guided Vehicles.

The report assesses the state-of-the-art in headway sensing and signal conditioning applicable to single-mode,automatically controlled guideway vehicles (ACGV) operating at less than three times the required stopping distance from a second vehicle. Headway measurement approaches break down into three general categories: (1) vehicle-mounted systems; (2) guideway-mounted systems,and (3) profile control. All available or potentially available systems are included which can operate safely under the following system parameters: measurement distances from 10to 500feet; (2) vehicle speeds from 10to 60mph; (3) vehicle capacity from 2to 15passengers; (4) vehicle accelerations less than 0.3 g,and (5) line capacities of 6,000to 45,000people per hour. The report catalogs for each system physical characteristics such as accuracy,size,reliability,and power;digital computation and signal conditioning equipment;system functional flow diagram;system costs,and significant communication,data handling,and data encoding/coding problems. The survey stresses near-term application of vehicle-borne microwave sensors,wayside detection,and sensing nets to measure range and range rate between vehicles. (Author)
