Tests were performed on an electric railroad passenger car having the capability of drawing power either from a third rail or from rectifiers fed by on-board turbine-driven alternators. These test reported herein represent a further effort to obtain the benefits of high horsepower-to-weight ratio and presumed ease of maintenance inherent in the modern gas turbine applied to railroad passenger car propulsion,while simultaneously exploring the possibility of a dual power car capable of drawing power from a third rail or its own power plant. They also develop and test a chopper controlled propulsion system. Tests were a sequel to and an extension of the 1966-67tests of suburban passenger car with turbo-mechanical drive, a single mode vehicle. They were directed toward suburban service having electrified tunnel access to Manhattan at one end and lines of insufficient density to justify electrification at the other,while retaining the flexibility of multiple unit car operation.
