Some Economic Consequences of Restricting the Subtherapeutic Use of Tetracyclines in Feedlot Cattle and Swine.

The report presents the results of a study of the economic impact on the feedlot industry and on consumers of restricting the subtherapeutic use of tetracyclines in feedlot cattle and swine. Cases studied include the use of equivalent substitute growth promotants or no substitute,and feeding pre-ban numbers of animals for the pre-ban period of time or lengthening the feeding period to achieve pre-ban levels of production. The report presents detailed findings on estimated feedlot costs and revenues. The analysis accounts for the effect on market prices of reduced meat supply and the effect on feed prices of changed feed demand. In general,the ban would impact on the feedlot industry and consumers in opposite ways. However,the use of an equivalent feed additive for growth promotion reduces the magnitude of the impact on both sectors of the economy. The minimum aggregate impact occurs when feedlot producers maintain pre-ban levels of production and use a substitute feed additive.
