Inventory Techniques for Sampling Avian Populations

In order to determine avian species composition and densities in a given area it is necessary to systematically inventory the habitat(s). Three basic types of data can be collected. First, species occurrence information indicates distribution by habitat type. Second, relative density data provides insight into which species are the most common and which are the most rare. Third, absolute density data provides information on how many birds of each individual species utilize a given habitat as well as total numbers of individuals which the habitat is supporting. This technical note's purpose is to review the major inventory techniques currently in use for birds.
