Evaluation of Spark Source Mass Spectrometry in the Analysis of Biological Samples.

The report is a feasibility study of the application of spark source mass spectrometry to the trace elemental analysis of a variety of samples of occupational health interest. Samples including bulk minerals,industrial dusts,blood,urine,freeze dried human lung tissue,acid ashed lung and low temperature ashed lung are analyzed. Three methods of detecting and recording spectra are described and the relative merits of each are discussed. Sample ashing techniques are also described. Spark source mass spectrometry is compared with emission spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectro-photometry as applied to the analysis of biological materials.
