In recent years, many changes have affected the population of the Ketchikan area, including closure of the pulp mill, decline of the timber industry, growth of the Ketchikan Shipyard, and the rise of the tourism industry. According to the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOLWD), the population of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, including the cities of Ketchikan and Saxman and outlying communities, decreased by 5.7% from 1990 to 2004 (DOLWD, 2005). However, these percentages do not portray the range of changes that occurred during the intervening years.
