The quote that introduces this chapter reflects the importance of subsistence hunting, fishing and plant gathering to the people of the Bering Straits Coastal Resource Service Area (CRSA). Most of the issues, goals and objectives discussed in Chapter 2 relate to the importance of subsistence and cultural resources. In fact, cultural aspects of the people cannot be separated from subsistence activities. The enforceable policies in Chapter 4 emphasize the importance of protecting subsistence activities and the biological resources that associated with these activities. The supplement to the resource inventory and analysis in Chapter 6 provides a background to important cultural considerations and the importance of subsistence to the day-to-day activities of the people of the region. This revision to the Bering Straits CRSA Coastal Management Plan (CMP) responds to state legislation passed in 2003 that required revisions to all coastal district plans. This plan revision responds to the requirement that the CMP be revised to comply with the amended Alaska Coastal Management Program (ACMP) statutes and the three revisions to the ACMP regulations made in 2004 and 2005.
