The Panel on Communicative Disorders held the first of numerous meetings in Bethesda, on December 15-16, 1977, and developed lists of subcommittee members to serve with each panel subcommittee chairman. The panels and subcommittees met repeatedly in the winter, spring and summer of 1978 in various cities across the Nation. Input from more than 700 subcommittee members and contributing consultants was attained. In addition, an open Public Forum for the Development of a Research Strategy fo the NINCDS was held in Chantilly, Virginia, on May 11-12, 1978. The report of this public forum is published as a separate document; in addition, careful consideration of the testimony was given by the Panel and is incorporated in this report. The report is, of necessity, a condensation of the massive amount of data, information and recommendations that was collected. As with all attempted overviews, the contributors and readers will find many missing facets. The Panel hopes, however, that the report presents a relatively comprehensive view of our current understanding of the neurosciences and of the health problems in communicative disorders. It is hoped that the needs of research to address these areas are appropriately outlined and will serve as a stimulus to the biomedical community, scientific clinicians, and researchers, and to others who consult this report as a guide to future research.
