The Effect of Rain Gage Densities on the Analysis of Storm Total Rainfall From Convective Complexes.

The Eddy Statistical Objective Analysis algorithm was subjected to intensive testing: (1) by performing a 'worst case'bivariate objective analysis of storm total rainfall volume using radar reflectivities and rain gage data on a very small Montana convective complex selected by Bureau of Reclamation personnel, (2) by using a simulated storm signal generator to test the univariate (gage only) analysis algorithm for sensitivity to sampling density wherein the gage 'observations'were taken on a regular network, (3) by analyzing two ensembles of simulated gage-only observation sets provided by the Bureau of Reclamation for comparison with the results from other analysis techniques. Between-storm discrimination techniques are discussed.
