Experience of the Relationship in Psychotherapy

Development of a method to evaluate the patient's experience of interaction with the therapist and the way the therapist deals with that interaction was studied. Significant progress was made towards establishing unit by unit agreement to give a descriptive account of the kind and degree of agreement that is reached. Significant progress was also made in the ratings of the quality of interpretations on the dimensions of plausibility, timeliness, clarity, and integration of evocativeness and tact. Also obtained was an interjudge agreement on the number of interventions of several kinds addressed to the relationship, on the quality of interpretations that are made, and on missed opportunities to interpret latent meanings pertaining to the patient's experience of the relationship. This could have a major influence on both practice and research in psychotherapy.
