Independent Living Arrangements for the Later Years: A Catalog of Potential Housing Choices for Older People in North Carolina

This catalog outlines independent living arrangements available for the elderly. It is directed to a North Carolina audience of housing consumers, suppliers (public and private) of housing and housing - related services, and agents of consumers and suppliers. Not all of the options presented are available in North Carolina but have been included to let people know what the options might be and thus widen their range of choices in planning future housing arrangements. The catalog begins by suggesting how to explore the alternatives and what organizational resource options should be locally provided to help with this exploration. It treats potential money sources to make housing choices possible and includes a chart displaying all the options presented. These options are broken down into two categories: those to help homeowners and renters stay at home (avoid institutionalization) and those to help owners and renters who are considering moving. The ''stay put'' options for homeowners include (1) continuing routine home maintenance, (2) making minor or major structural modifications, and (3) homesharing. The ownership options for movers focus on condominium ownership, cooperative housing ownership, mobile homes, and shared houses. Charts for each category of options include suggestions of organizations at the local level that might arrange for options to be made available or advise on how best to start programs to make them available, as well as appropriate option providers and financing sources (public and private). Following each chart, additional information is included about each option, providing specific examples of model programs. An appendix provides supplementary information, a chart showing relevant Federal programs as of September 1981, and a list of selected readings. (Author abstract modified).
