Vocational Education Training in Environmental Health Sciences: Performing Analyses for Waterborne Bacteria, Module 13

In this instructional module, students learn to perform an examination of drinking water for the presence of indicator bacteria (coliform). Training Prerequisites: Before beginning this module, students should have had a course in high school biology or have gained the equivalent knowledge through on-the-job training; know how to use laboratory pipets; and have learned how to use a stereo microscope. Objectives: Upon completion of this module, students will be able to perform the following functions: Name, sterilize, and assemble the component parts of a membrane filter test unit, suction a water sample through a membrane filter, using aseptic techniques, and prepare the membrane filter for incubation, and determine the number of total coliform organisms in a water sample.
