Criteria for Bulkheading Outlet Works Intakes for Storage Dams

The document presents Bureau of Reclamation policy pertaining to requirements for providing upstream bulkhead closures for waterways appurtenant to storage dams. Presented are criteria for bulkheading outlet works intakes for proposed storage dams, application of the criteria to existing dams, and policy guidance for use in design of bulkheads. It is good practice to provide for bulkheading of intakes by including slots and seats in the design and by having bulkheads constructed and available for use during the life of the project in case they are needed. Bulkhead provisions are also desirable to ensure the safety-related structural integrity of Reclamation dams by facilitating periodic examination of waterways. Consequently, provisions for bulkhead facilities for water intakes are important safety considerations in the design of storage dams.
