Patron of Pure Science: The National Science Foundation's Formative Years, 1945-57

A history of the National Science Foundation (NSF), from the time it was first proposed until the mid-1970s, is provided. The creation of NSF is described and the appointment of NSF's first board, director, and staff, is discussed. Early decisions on research and fellowship programs, administration of these programs, and conflicts over the agency's policies, are examined. Also explored are NSF's expanding educational and research programs, including ventures into international cooperation and the continuing effort to determine the Foundation's role in the making of national science policy.
