Analysis of Agricultural Ecosystems: Stability and Diversity

Stability problems with U.S. and California agriculture, including the trend to increased use of purchased inputs and the increased linkage between U.S. agriculture and foreign markets, are discussed. Models are developed to (1) reflect the instability developing in agriculture and (2) reflect the application of ecological stability principles to agricultural systems. Results are presented of a survey of farmers, business representatives, and university researchers who were asked what factors influence farm viability. Responses include training, technology, natural resources, financing, and marketing.
