Comparing DSM III-to Beck Depression Inventory Depression

The differential contributions made to the accurate measurement of depression by the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS), as an operationalization of the diagnostic criteria set forth in the DSM-III, and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) (original version) were studied. The two measures were administered concurrently to a random sample of the great metropolitan St. Louis area, and the strengths and weaknesses of each instrument, and the relationship between the two were examined. The psychometric properties of the BDI as a survey instrument in the unselected U.S. adult population, and its validity using DSM-III diagnoses of affective disorder as the criterion, were determined.
