Use of Single Chip Microcomputers in Sub-Stations

The advantages were reviewed of using distributed intelligence in an electrical power distribution system. Criteria to be met by instruments developed for the application were evaluated and a system of developmental rules established to ensure that the requirements could be satisfied. Instruments in the Capenhurst range of microcomputer developments were described briefly. Gains in cost, reliability and performance were predicted for the use of distributed microcomputers in sub-stations compared with a central computer and the associated signalling system. The proposed solution involved a common instrument range of limited performance with program flexibility provided by the use of different plug-in 'piggy-back' microcomputers.
