Economic Impact of Ordinances of Ministry of Supply Regulating the Processes of Production and Distribution of Balady Bread

Because 'Balady' bread is the mainstay of the Egyptian diet, the government has exerted much effort, including a huge price subsidy, to make it available. To test the effectiveness of the bread policy a questionnaire was administered in 1983 to 52 public and private sector bakeries in the Greater Cairo area. The major problems discovered were: (1) A shortage of Balady bread in certain quarters of Cairo and (2) the low quality of some of the bread produced.
