Economic, Social, and Environmental Impacts of Biomass Production and Supply – a Suggestion of a Biomass Accounting Form

A biomass accounting form, which is based on the concept of biomass accounting, was designedas a biomass decision-making supporting tool. It simplifies data entry, makes possible automatic tabledisplay, result generation, and analysis, as well as some projections if no actual data are available.Indicators to estimate environmental and economic performance of biomass-related activities werechosen based on the main goals of biomass utilization in Japan, stated in Biomass-Nippon Strategy.They include biomass utilization rate, local biomass utilization rate, CO2 balance, and fossil fuelsubstitution rate. Regarding social indicators, they were selected with the reference to internationalexperience of biomass project social impact estimation; however, they were modified in order toreflect economic and social realities of Japan.
