Research undertaken to develop an economical assembly system for batch manufacturing is reported. Three passive, programmable double belt feeding and orienting systems that use techniques such as simple vision and mechanical obstructions to recirculate parts that are not properly oriented are described. All three systems have been designed for versatility through microprocessor programming or through mechanical adjustments. Benefits of bin-type belt feeders are examined. It is pointed out that the belt feeding and orienting system is quieter than bowl feeding systems because the parts are transported on soft belts instead of on hard track; thus, a belt system is ideal for fragile or delicate parts. It is concluded that the base feeders, if reproduced in quantities as are vibratory bowl feeders, would cost considerably less than fully engineered bowl feeder systems. Appendices contain a discussion of part stability in a queueing station as well as part drawings of mechanical components.
