National Medical Care Utilization and Expenditure Survey (NMCUES) Series B, Descriptive Report No. 5. Supplemental Health Insurance Coverage among Aged Medicare Beneficiaries

The report describes the kinds of insurance coverage reported by the aged Medicare population in 1980 and the extent to which these sources of payment cover health services. The report covers three areas of concern: it presents estimates of persons with Medicare and their distribution among several categories of public and private supplemental health insurance coverage, the frequency with which Medicare enrollees acquire private insurance and the kinds of private insurance chosen, and the distribution of expenditures by source of payment to describe how expenses for health care for the Medicare beneficiaries are paid. The results presented are based on data collected on the civilian, noninstituionalized persons in the National Medical Care Utilization and Expenditure Survey national household sample.
