Aging of Plastic Pipe Used for Gas Distribution. Final Report May 1984-December 1988

Various physical, mechanical and chemical tests have been performed upon pipe samples recovered from service by gas utility companies in the U.S. and Canada. The usefulness of these tests as a means of evaluating aging of plastic gas piping was assessed. Also because aging of polymeric materials begins at the surface of a product, material from the outer and inner surfaces of each pipe sample along with that from the core (or mid-wall) were tested. Hydrostatic pressure tests and three point bend testing of notched pipe specimens were evaluated as predictive methods of pipe service life.
