摘要

A theoretical investigation of the vertical spanning capacity of a clay brick wall 110 mm thick to resist out-of-plane wind loads was made in which the effects of base restraint moment, top support stiffness and vertical surcharge load were considered in determining the lateral load capacity of the wall prior to cracking and the capacity after cracking. The magnitude of the base restraint moment and its dependence upon the elastic moduli of the masonry elements top support stiffness, surcharge loads, damp-proof course thickness and stiffness and the base stiffness was investigated. The capacity of the uncracked wall calculated from the rigorous analysis is compared with the capacity from a simplistic analysis of a simply supported wall with no base restraint moment and the critical section at the wall mid-height. The capacity of the cracked wall to resist wind loads is compared to the capacity of the uncracked wall.
