Developing Courseware and Developing Highly Interactive Software

The paper is an attempt to compare the characteristics of two design disciplines: courseware and highly interactive software. Courseware is considered as an extreme example of interactive software. The experiences found with courseware seem to be important for the development of highly interactive software. On the other hand, new concepts for developing user interfaces may be fruitful for the development of courseware. With the increasing use of graphical workstations new standards are coming up both for operating systems, networking, window systems and user interface styles. A conclusion is presented that the emphasis, now given to user interface design, will provide the opportunity to define international standards for courseware development as extensions to the industrial standards for graphical workstations.
