Extending Life, Enhancing Life: A National Research Agenda on Aging. Appendix B.Clinical Research Liaison Team Report

The purpose of the report is to describe a recommended agenda for clinicalresearch in aging for the near future as determined by deliberations of the clinical liaison team. The group defined gerontologic clinical research as research focusing on elderly human beings, ranging from clinical studies to studies involving tissues or cells. The group identified two over arching research areas considered to be of primary research importance. These two areas are investigation into: (1) the causes, prevention, and rehabilitation of disability in the elderly and; (2) the interaction of aging and specific disease processes that are the causes of the greatest morbidity, mortality, and health care utilization among the elderly. The two areas are interconnected with specific disease processes contributing to disability.
