Variations in the early developmental history of the organism can set the stagefor differential patterns of senescence. Some biologists, therefore, use the term aging to refer to a much wider array of processes, beginning at birth and ending at death. This 'life-course' approach to biogerontology thus parallels the research paradigm of many social gerontologists. While the term 'biomedical research' encompasses clinical as well as basic science research, the chapter is predominantly concerned with basic science aspects of biomedical research. It addresses research that is germane to our understanding of fundamental mechanisms of aging and senescence as well as research that asks how aging might be coupled to the increasing expression of a number of specific age-related diseases.
